CARI Therapy Services

The Children At Risk in Ireland Foundation was set up to provide therapy for children and adolescents affected by the issue of sexual abuse. CARI now also works theraputically with children up to the age of 12 who may be displaying inappropriate sexualised behaviour.

Services available include:
  • Child and adolescent psychotherapy/counselling.

  • Advice Appointments for parents and carers in need of support with regard to a young person in their care who has been affected by sexual abuse or sexualised behaviour.

  • Ongoing support for parents and carers throughout their child's therapy.

Criteria for Referrals for Child and Adolescent Therapy

We accept referrals in respect of:
  • Children who have disclosed sexual abuse and whose disclosures have been investigated by the appropriate authorities.

  • Children who have undergone a sexual abuse investigation for any other reason (e.g. discovery of child abuse, medical injury, access by a known offender, suspicion of child sexual abuse based on behaviour or sexualised language/behaviour).

  • Siblings of the above

  • Children who have been affected by information regarding the alleged sexual abuse of another child/children and/or who may have been the confidante of a disclosure (e.g. members of a group/club where child sexual abuse has been an issue, a child whose relative/family member has perpetrated sexual abuse), provided that this has been reported to the appropriate authorities.

  • Children who witness reported sexual assaults on other children or adults.

  • Children, up to the age of 12 years, who have engaged in inappropriate sexual behaviour with another child, provided that this has been reported to the appropriate authorities.

  • Parental / Carer Support

While the child or adolescent is attending CARI, a unique and important service is offered through parallel support sessions for the parents or carers. If the young person is in the care of the HSE we will offer ongoing support to the care staff team.

    Awaiting Assessment?
In cases where a child or adolescent is alleged to have been sexually abused but the assessment of the abuse has not yet been completed, CARI can offer support to the parents or carers while awaiting the assessment outcome.

This support can offer a space for parents to gain an understanding of the assessment process, and how to help their child through this.

Advice Appointments

We offer a limited number of advice appointments/crisis counseling to parents, carers, professionals or other adults with a concern regarding child sexual abuse.

These appointments offer an opportunity to explore concerns in a face to face consultation with one of our therapists.

Confidentiality
While the focus of these appointments is on providing support and information, in line with the Children First Guidelines, appointments can be made on a first name basis to provide confidentiality.

During these appointments the therapist will discuss what services CARI can offer and how we might best support the concerned adult/s and the child or adolescent they are caring for.

These appointments can be arranged by contacting the lo-call Helpline on 1890-924567

Fees

The CARI Foundation's is an organisation which receives a limited amount of state funding and relies on charity donations.

We ask clients to make a contribution or donation that they are financially comfortable with.

This fee covers all appointments, including assessment and therapy sessions.

The amount the client or family is able to afford will be decided with them at assessment stage. Sometimes the HSE or other agencies will pay the fees on the family’s behalf.

Fees will be charged for missed sessions unless 24 hours notice is given.

Making a referral

Referrals can be made by Social Workers, Gardai, Solicitors, G.P.s, Psychologists, Psychotherapists, Psychiatrists and other professionals.

Referral forms can be requested by contacting the lo-call Helpline on 1890-924567

Once we have received the completed Referral Form and sufficient background information on the case, we will meet with the parent(s) and/or carers of the child to assess the suitability of our service for the client.
